Welcome to my blog! My name is Rachel Osborne and I am an Oceanside native. My childhood, adolescent and young adult years were experienced in and around North County. As a result my educational background is not very diverse. I attended Kindergarten through fifth grade at Tri-City Christian School; a private school located in Vista.
Technology is an area that continues to amaze me. I remember the days when research was done in a library and with encyclopedias, you had to use a land line to talk with or invite a friend over, the AM/FM radio played a large role in determining the type of the music you listened to, and a Thomas Map Guide was kept in the backseat of the car for those rare occasions you were lost or needed to look up directions.

I have always been a PC user but am interested in learning more about what the Mac has to offer. I use an archaic version of Microsoft Office and have experience with; Excell, Publisher, Access, Power Point and Outlook. I am not a natural when it comes learning how to use new technologies. It usually takes a lot of patience and hands on instructions before I can operate something on a basic level. I know it will take an effort on my part to stay current with this ever changing world.
My desire to be a part of the College of Education (CEO) at CSUSM was influenced by the presence they have in San Diego’s schools and praise reports I have heard from a number of different teachers. The COE’s “commitment to student-centered education, diversity, collaboration, professionalism, and shared governance,” as stated in their mission statement, also increased my interest in the program they offer. When students are the focus and center of every decision and tasks are accomplished in a group effort with a professional mindset allowing open communication, much can be achieved.
Hi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteYour description of "old-technology" struck a cord with me. I remember researching for HOURS in the SDSU library and only coming up with a small amount of information. I am SO thankful for the Internet! What subject(s) and grades do you plan to teach?

Hi Rachel! Even though I went to Tri City for High School and you were there for Elementary School , I thought it was very interesting that we both attended the same school! That is so great that you taught English to students in the Czech Republic.. all of my father's side of the family is from there and I visited there when I was a senior in high school! Look forward to getting to know you better!

Hi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteNice blog! I enjoyed reading about what led you to teaching! I like hearing people's stories about how they "found" teaching or what sparked their interest! How exciting to spend summers teaching English in the Czech Republic! I hope I didn't miss this somewhere in your blog but are you planning to teach English or something different because your BS is in Business Administration?

Hi Rachel, Who can not forget going to the library and doing research for hours on a particular subject. This comment brought back many memories of projects and group work and being stuck in the library. I grew up in the Tri-City area and I think at one point in time the school was located where a Bank of America was located. I can't remember but I do remember some of friends use to skate in the parking lot. Great Blog.
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI remember too when I was dependent on papers and books to find information. I actually remember when I attended Mesa College and took English 105 a literature class. I did not have a computer to count on at that time and everything had to be typed on an old fashion type writer. One paper I rewrote 6 times because I kept making mistakes. It was a long paper too. Things are so much easier today...love writing papers now.
Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI like your comments on the world before all the "fingertip" technologies. I remember my parents investing in a set of "Encyclopedia Britannica" to give us kids an advantage to learning more. My kids today just "Google" everything and well, so do I. It really is an information intensive world.
